Loestrin is a drug that is used for preventing an unwanted pregnancy. It contains ethinylestradiol and norethindrone, both of which are synthetic versions of naturally occurring female hormones. These hormones help in preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries. This drug also changes the uterine lining and makes the cervical mucus thicker. This makes it harder for the sperm to reach the uterus through the vagina. Always consult a doctor before you use the pill.
Just like any other contraceptive pill, do not use Loestrin, Yasmin, microgynon or any other contraceptive pill if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or if you have recently delivered a baby. Do not use it if you are breastfeeding a baby as the drug can pass on to the baby through breast milk and harm the newborn. Also, avoid using it if you have a history of blood clots, circulation problems, cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal bleeding, liver disease or jaundice.
Use Loestrin as recommended by your doctor. The risk of blood clots and heart attacks increases if you smoke when using it for contraceptive purposes. Using this drug in conjunction with certain other medications is not very safe as you can suffer from adverse drug reactions. Before using it, talk to a doctor if you are currently using or have used in the recent past any other drug, medication or supplement. Loestrin contraceptive pill makes some drugs less effective, especially contraceptive drugs and this can result in a pregnancy.
